{ 06 } — The three settings
Polyvagal states, in plain English: anxious, angry, shut down.
Three states · 5 min read · The move: match the tool to the state
You've been told stress is a dial from calm to stressed. It isn't. Your nervous system has three settings, and they feel completely different from the inside.
Safe and social, then mobilised
Steady breathing. You can hear the person in front of you. Problems feel like problems, not threats. This is the setting everything else is trying to get back to.
Heart up, jaw tight, thoughts racing. Anxiety and anger live here. They're the same alarm pointed in different directions. The body has decided something needs doing and it is loading you with fuel to do it. Sitting still with this much fuel on board is why "just relax" makes it worse.
Shut down: freeze
When the alarm has gone on too long, or the threat felt impossible to fight or flee, the system pulls the plug. Flat. Numb. Tired in your bones. You may be told you look calm. You're not calm. You're offline. This state gets missed constantly because it's quiet.
The move — pick by state
Match the tool to the state.
- Mobilised needs somewhere for the fuel to go: shaking, a hard exhale, movement with rhythm.
- Shut down needs a gentle signal that it's safe to come back up: orienting to the room, cold on the skin, slow bilateral movement.
- A breathing meditation is the wrong tool for both when they're loud. That mismatch is why people decide they're bad at calming down.
In Regulate
Regulate is built around these three states. You check in with where your body actually is, and the app hands you a tool for that state. Anger gets a shake. Shutdown gets something that wakes you up slowly. Nothing asks you to sit still and breathe when your body is screaming to move.
